Before we get started, it’s crucial to inspect the device thoroughly. Check that the LCD isn’t damaged—because if it is, the job becomes more complex and costly. Fortunately, in this case, only the glass needs replacing. Let’s dive right in!

Power Down and Assess

The first and most critical step is to power down the iPad. Hold the power button and slide to power off. This step is essential to avoid any electrical damage or short circuits during the repair process.

Now, the hardest part: removing the old, broken screen from the chassis. The best way to do this is by using a heat mat or hot plate set to 85°C. If you don’t have a heat mat, you can use a hot air gun or even a hair dryer—just ensure that the iPad is placed screen-side up, and the glass should be hot to the touch.

Tools and Equipment You’ll Need

While your iPad is heating up, let’s quickly run through the tools and equipment you’ll need for this repair:

  1. Isopropyl Alcohol: Helps to soften the adhesive.
  2. Microfiber Cleaning Cloths: Essential for keeping the screen and components clean.
  3. Fine-Point Tweezers: Useful for handling small parts and glass fragments.
  4. Razor Blade and Guitar Pick (or Opening Pick): These are for prying the screen from the chassis.
  5. Cross-Headed Screwdriver: Required for removing screws from the iPad’s internals.
  6. X07 Replacement Screen: These screens are designed for iPad 7, 8, and 9 series and come with pre-applied adhesive and a home button gasket.
  7. Battery Isolation Pick: This helps to isolate the battery during the repair, ensuring safety.

Removing the Broken Screen

Once the iPad is adequately heated, it’s time to carefully remove the broken screen. Pay special attention to the right-hand edge and the area around the home button—these are delicate zones with important cables that you don’t want to damage.

Start by using your razor blade to create a small gap between the metal chassis and the glass. Insert the blade just a few millimeters to lift the edge of the glass. Once you have a small gap, switch to your guitar pick or opening tool and begin sliding it down the edge of the iPad.

A Quick Tip:

In areas where the glass is more severely broken, push the pick in a little further to get better leverage, but be sure not to touch the LCD underneath. Run the pick along the edges, carefully lifting the glass. Use tweezers to remove any small pieces of glass that might remain stuck.

Now that one edge is free, hold the screen in place while you repeat the process along the bottom edge. Be particularly careful around the home button area—only insert the pick a couple of millimeters to avoid damaging the home button flex cable. If the adhesive is too stubborn, add a few drops of isopropyl alcohol to help loosen it.

Once all three edges are separated, the screen should open like a book cover. Flip the screen up carefully, and you’ll see the flex cables that connect the screen to the iPad. Avoid cutting along this edge entirely to prevent damaging these critical connections.

Removing the LCD

With the broken glass now loose, prop the screen open using a mug or another heavy object, and it’s time to remove the LCD. You’ll need to unscrew the four screws at each corner of the LCD.

Pro Tip:

Avoid touching the LCD itself during this process—fingerprints and smudges on the LCD can be a nightmare to clean up later.

If there are still pieces of broken glass stuck to the edges, use an X-Acto blade (I recommend a #17 blade) to carefully scrape them off. Work slowly and methodically to ensure you don’t scratch the LCD or other components. If any glass dust falls onto the LCD, don’t panic. Dry debris is manageable and can be cleaned up later.

After the glass is cleared away, peel back the black tape covering the screws and unscrew them using a cross-headed screwdriver. Once the screws are out, you’ll notice a bit of adhesive holding the LCD down in the corners. Use your tweezers to gently pry the corners of the LCD loose. Be patient and careful—you don’t want to crack the LCD at this stage.

Once free, the LCD can be lifted and stood up on its edge. Now comes a critical step: isolating the battery.

Isolating the Battery

To avoid any potential electrical hazards, it’s vital to disconnect the battery before you proceed. Unscrew the screw holding down the battery connector and use your battery isolation pick to slide under the connector, lifting it slightly to disconnect it from the logic board.

Once the battery is isolated, unscrew the three screws at the bottom that secure the shield over the connectors. With the shield removed, use a plastic prying tool to disconnect the LCD, touchscreen, and home button connectors one by one. The LCD is now completely free and can be set aside in a safe place.

Preparing the Chassis for the New Screen

With the old screen removed, it’s time to prepare the iPad’s chassis for the new glass. This step is crucial to ensure a strong bond with the new screen.

Using your X-Acto blade again, carefully scrape away any remaining adhesive from the edges of the chassis. Be mindful of the flex cables and antennas—a slip of the hand here could cause significant damage.

After scraping off the bulk of the adhesive, add some isopropyl alcohol to soften any remaining residue. Use a microfiber cloth to wipe away the softened adhesive, leaving the chassis clean and smooth.

Check the Screws:

While you’re working on the chassis, it’s a good idea to check the tightness of all screws. These can often work loose over time, and tightening them will help maintain the structural integrity of your iPad.

Preparing the New Screen

Now it’s time to focus on the new digitizer. The first step is to transfer components from the old screen to the new one. Start by removing the plastic bracket around the camera and any other necessary components.

The home button is particularly tricky. If you damage the home button or its flex cable, Touch ID will be permanently disabled. To safely remove it:

As you press the edges of the screen down to secure it, pay close attention to the flex cables—make sure they aren’t pinched or caught between the digitizer and the chassis.

There’s no need to use clamps—the pre-applied adhesive is strong enough to hold the digitizer securely in place. Just give it a good press along the edges to ensure a tight seal.

Once the screen is secure, your iPad is ready to go back to your customer, looking as good as new!

Yes, you heard that right—you could buy almost four Redmi Note 13 Pro Plus phones for the price of one Galaxy S23 Ultra. But how close does the user experience actually get? Let’s break it down, category by category, to see how these two phones compare.

Unboxing Experience: Xiaomi Takes the Lead

You’d think the unboxing experience of a flagship phone would be unmatched, right? Surprisingly, that’s not the case here. The Redmi Note 13 Pro Plus offers a more comprehensive package right out of the box. In addition to the phone itself, Xiaomi includes a matte black protective case, a USB-C cable, and—get this—a 120W fast charger. In stark contrast, Samsung’s $1,379 Galaxy S23 Ultra comes with just a cable. No case, no charger. If you want a charger, you’ll have to buy it separately, and even then, you won’t get close to the charging speed of the Redmi. Right off the bat, you’re looking at additional costs with the Samsung.

Build Quality: Not as Different as You’d Think

When it comes to build quality, you’d expect flagship phones to offer significantly higher-quality materials, and in some ways, they do. The Galaxy S23 Ultra is equipped with the latest Gorilla Glass Victus 2 on the front and back, while the Redmi Note 13 Pro Plus features the previous generation Gorilla Glass Victus 1. The difference? The newer Victus 2 can withstand slightly more force before cracking. The Galaxy also has an Armor Aluminum frame, which is a bit tougher than the standard aluminum on the Redmi.

However, most users won’t notice these subtle differences. The Xiaomi Redmi Note 13 Pro Plus doesn’t flex, creak, or feel cheap in any way. It’s clearly designed for power users who need top-tier performance. The Xiaomi, on the other hand, is more than capable for basic tasks like browsing, social media, and light gaming. If you’re a heavy user or a gamer, you’ll feel the difference—the Redmi offers about 50% of the performance of the Samsung. However, for average users who don’t push their phones to the limit, the experience might feel closer to 75% of the flagship experience.

While the Redmi’s software is impressive for its price, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra offers a more refined and long-lasting experience. I’d rate the Redmi’s software experience at 85% of what Samsung provides.

Introduction: With each new iPhone release comes a wave of excitement, curiosity, and for many, the inevitable question of repairability. As someone who’s deeply invested in the repair community, I couldn’t resist the opportunity to dive deep into the latest iPhone 14 Pro. In my usual fashion, I’ve purchased not one, but two units of this latest iPhone. This not only allows me to disassemble them to see what’s inside but also to assess how repairable they are by swapping parts between the two phones. With a significant price increase from last year, these phones set me back a staggering $3,500. So, the big question is: what do we get for our money, and how easy (or difficult) is it to repair these devices?

Unboxing and First Impressions: Let’s start with what’s in the box—or more accurately, what’s not in the box. Like its predecessors, the iPhone 14 Pro does not come with a charger. However, what we do get is a SIM card tray, which is something to be grateful for, especially considering that all US models now lack this feature due to the move towards eSIM technology. Once I unboxed both the silver and purple units, I immediately noticed how similar they look to the iPhone 13 Pro. But appearances can be deceiving, especially when it comes to repairability.

Disassembly Process: Before diving into the disassembly, I made sure both phones were set up and fully functional, including programming Face ID. Both phones are model A2890, running iOS 16.0. With that out of the way, it was time to crack them open.

To begin the disassembly, I placed one of the phones on a heat plate set to high for about five minutes. This helps soften the adhesive holding the display in place. Once sufficiently heated, I removed the two pentalobe screws at the base of the phone. While these screws are mainly a deterrent, they still need to be removed to access the internals. Using a suction cup, I carefully pried open the display, inserting a plastic pick to slice through the adhesive and release the retaining clips.

Internal Layout: Opening the iPhone 14 Pro reveals a familiar yet slightly modified internal layout compared to the iPhone 13 Pro. Up top, you’ll notice a more compact Face ID array and the A16 Bionic branding on the logic board. The internal components are meticulously arranged, with only one bracket covering the display and battery connections. However, this bracket is still secured with eight tri-wing screws, which is standard for Apple devices.

Next, I disconnected the battery and display cables, allowing me to remove the display entirely. I repeated the same steps for the second phone, as my plan was to swap the logic boards between the two devices—a test to see how Apple’s software handles part replacements.

Swapping Parts: Here’s where things get interesting. Despite both phones being identical, past experience has taught me that Apple’s software can be notoriously picky about part replacements, even with genuine Apple components. In previous iPhone models, swapping components like the camera, battery, or display often triggered software issues, disabled features, and persistent warning messages. The question now is whether the iPhone 14 Pro is any different.

After disconnecting a total of 13 flex cables, I noticed the logic board was still held down by something. It turned out to be the earpiece, which, once removed, revealed one more hidden screw. With all screws out of the way, I carefully extracted the logic board from the phone. Upon close inspection, I noticed the SIM tray was soldered in place, which raises questions about the internal layout of the US models that lack a physical SIM tray.

With both logic boards freed, it was time for the switcheroo. The only change I made was swapping the logic boards, essentially swapping the brains of the devices. Everything else remained original to each phone. After reassembling the devices, it was time to test them.

Testing and Issues: Once the logic boards were swapped and the displays reattached, I powered on the devices. Initially, everything seemed fine—until I unlocked the phone. I was immediately bombarded with notifications stating that my phone couldn’t verify if the parts were genuine. But how does Apple know? Well, each component in an iPhone is given a unique serial number that’s matched to the phone during manufacturing. As soon as the software detects a mismatch, it triggers these warnings.

These messages aren’t just annoying—they actually block certain features from working. Face ID? Forget about it; it’s disabled. Battery health monitoring? Gone. True Tone and auto-brightness? Both are disabled. This makes the phone inconvenient to use, especially with features like the always-on display, which becomes almost unusable without auto-brightness. And when it comes to the cameras, the rear cameras worked fine, but the front camera refused to function at all.

To confirm my suspicions, I conducted the same tests on the other phone, which produced identical issues. This clearly indicates that Apple is still implementing anti-third-party repair measures, even with their new self-repair program.

iOS Updates and Further Complications: Just when I thought things couldn’t get worse, I decided to update one of the phones to iOS 16.0.1 to see if it would resolve any of the issues. Surprisingly, it did restore some functionality to the front camera, but Portrait Mode and Cinematic Mode remained broken. This is because Apple uses some of the Face ID hardware for these modes, so replacing the front camera not only disables Face ID but also affects these camera features.

But here’s where things took a turn for the worse. After the update, the original part was rejected by the original phone, a first in my experience. Resetting the phone didn’t help either—Face ID and the front camera remained non-functional. The only solution was to downgrade back to iOS 16.0, which temporarily restored functionality. This raises concerns about Apple potentially using software updates to further complicate repairs, making it even harder for users and independent repair shops to fix their devices.

Physical Repair Challenges: Beyond the software issues, the physical repair process also presents challenges. For instance, removing the battery—a common repair task—is made difficult by the use of stretch release adhesive that easily breaks. I managed to remove one adhesive strip, but the other snapped off, leaving the battery firmly stuck in place. Even with alcohol to help loosen the adhesive, it was a struggle to get the battery out.

The camera array was another beast to tackle. Secured under a large metal bracket with tri-wing screws, the camera module is massive, dwarfing older iPhone cameras like the one from the iPhone 5S. The rear glass is also incredibly difficult to replace, thanks to Apple’s use of an adhesive that’s so strong it might as well be considered a weld.

Reassembly and Final Thoughts: After carefully reinstalling the original parts back into each phone, I was relieved to see that all the errors and issues had disappeared. However, the entire experience left me questioning Apple’s approach to repairability. Despite their self-repair program, Apple still exerts complete control over the repair process, from the physical disassembly to the software that runs on the device.

If you replace the display, you lose True Tone and auto-brightness. A new battery disables battery health monitoring. A replaced front camera breaks Face ID, Portrait Mode, and Cinematic Mode. And if you replace the logic board, you trigger all of these issues simultaneously.

In conclusion, while the iPhone 14 Pro is undoubtedly a technological marvel, it’s also a stark reminder of the ongoing battle between consumer rights and corporate control. I might have spent $3,500 on these phones, but they don’t feel entirely mine. Apple’s anti-third-party repair measures make it clear that they want to maintain control over their devices long after they leave the store.
